The Crime

On the night of October 30, 1969, Barbara was home with her youngest daughter, 2-year-old Christina. As the evening progressed, she received a chilling phone call, supposedly from her husband, Arthur. Arthur claimed to be calling from the airport, informing Barbara that he would be delayed due to a business emergency. This was a peculiar occurrence, as the couple had made no such arrangements beforehand.

Shortly after this phone call, an unknown individual entered the Marr residence through a basement window. The intruder confronted Barbara, striking her with a blunt object multiple times. The blows were so severe that they fractured her skull and caused massive internal injuries. The assailant then meticulously removed any evidence of their presence, including wiping down all surfaces and removing Barbara's wedding ring.

Barbara's body was discovered the following morning by her eldest daughter, 12-year-old Susan. The scene was gruesome, with blood spattered on the walls and furniture. The authorities were immediately called, and an investigation was launched into the murder.

The Investigation

The Greenwich Police Department, assisted by the Connecticut State Police, conducted a thorough investigation into Barbara Marr's murder. They interviewed numerous individuals, including family members, friends, and acquaintances. Several suspects emerged, but none could be definitively linked to the crime.

One of the most compelling suspects was Barbara's husband, Arthur. He had reportedly been experiencing financial difficulties and had been unfaithful to his wife. However, Arthur had a solid alibi for the night of the murder, as confirmed by his business associates.

Another suspect was a man named Richard Herrin, who had been romantically involved with Barbara in the past. Herrin had a history of violence and had even threatened Barbara's life on several occasions. However, there was no concrete evidence to connect him to the murder.

The police also considered the possibility that Barbara's murder was linked to a burglary. The intruder may have been targeting the Marr residence for its valuables, but when Barbara confronted them, they panicked and killed her. However, this theory was also difficult to prove, as the intruder left behind nothing of value.

The Aftermath

The murder of Barbara Marr sent shockwaves through the Greenwich community. Residents were terrified and demanded answers. However, the case quickly grew cold, and the killer remained at large.

In the years that followed, the Marr family endured unimaginable pain and sorrow. Barbara's children grew up without a mother, and her husband, Arthur, was forever haunted by the unsolved murder of his wife.

The Legacy

The Barbara Marr murder mystery remains one of the most notorious unsolved cases in Connecticut history. It has been featured in numerous books, television shows, and documentaries. The case continues to fascinate true crime enthusiasts and has sparked countless theories about what happened that fateful night.

The murder of Barbara Gibbons Marr was a tragedy that shattered the lives of her family and friends. Decades later, her killer remains unknown, leaving behind a haunting mystery that may never be solved. The Barbara Marr murder mystery serves as a chilling reminder that even in the most affluent communities, evil can lurk in the shadows.
